CIA plans to join Instagram

first_img Share your voice 0 Tags Internet Post a comment CIA Director Gina Haspel says the agency will soon have an official presence on Instagram. CIA via Twitter The CIA’s getting ready to transmit some photos — on social media. The usually secretive intelligence agency plans to launch an Instagram page in the near future, CIA Director Gina Haspel said during a national security forum Thursday at Auburn University. Haspel declassified the agency’s plans while discussing its social media-savvy recruits and the challenge of trying to be transparent about its activities.”Just to talk a moment about transparency, of course CIA does have a Twitter account,” Haspel said. “Our office of public affairs is getting ready to launch our Instagram account.”Haspel acknowledged that some at the agency’s Langley, Virginia, headquarters aren’t eager to spill too many details about what it does, as noted by Mashable, which previously reported on the development.”We try and be as open as we can, and to protect the secrets that we must protect,” Haspel said.As Haspel noted, the CIA already has an official account on Twitter, with more than 2.5 million followers, but the account appears to be mostly used to recruit new agents and offer history on the agency and some of its key figures over the years. There’s no word on when the account will begin sharing snaps — or whether the pics come from those tiny spy cameras you see in the movies. A CIA representative declined to comment further beyond Haspel’s remarks. Haspel’s speech: Instagramlast_img read more

German leader EU visionary Kohl dies

first_imgThis file photo taken on 27 September, 2012 shows former German chancellor Helmut Kohl unveils a poster showing a stamp featuring him at the German Historical Museum (Deutsches Historisches Museum) in Berlin, during a ceremony celebrating the 30th anniversary of Kohl being elected Chancellor, by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in honor of his political achievements. Photo: AFPGermany’s longest serving post-war leader, Helmut Kohl, the father of German reunification and an architect of European integration, died Friday at the age of 87.Kohl, a passionate European, helped long-divided Germany navigate the traumatic transition to a reunified country, and later worked with France’s Francois Mitterand to put Germany at the core of the European project.Tributes poured in for the man US former president George H.W. Bush hailed as “one of the greatest” postwar leaders, and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker called the “very essence of Europe”.“We are mourning. #RIP #HelmutKohl,” said his conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), on Twitter, with a photo of the former leader, who served as chancellor for 16 years.Kohl died in his house in Ludwigshafen, in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said Bild daily, whose management had close ties with the conservative politician.Juncker, mourning the loss of Kohl, “a great European and a very close friend”, said: “Helmut Kohl filled the European house with life – not only because he built bridges to the west as well as to the east, but also because he never ceased to design even better blueprints for the future of Europe.”Also underlining his contributions, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel called Kohl “a great statesman, a great German politician, and above all a great European, who did much not only to bring German unity but also for Europe to become one”.“This is his great legacy. This is what we will remember him for. Our thoughts are with his family and children. A truly great German has died,” said Gabriel in a statement.Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to speak around 1700 GMT in Rome. She learnt of the death of her one-time mentor while en route to Rome, on the eve of a meeting with Pope Francis on Saturday.‘Mantle of history’ -Born a Catholic on April 3, 1930 in the western industrial city of Ludwigshafen, Kohl rose quickly through the ranks of the CDU, his ever-smiling blonde wife Hannelore, with whom he had two sons, by his side.He became chancellor of West Germany in 1982 and oversaw its reunification with the East.As the Cold War ended with the Berlin Wall coming down in November 1989, he moved to “grab the mantle of history,” as he later said, forging a political stature commensurate with his towering height.Former protegee Angela Merkel lauded Kohl’s contribution to German and European integration in 2012, on the 30th anniversary of his becoming chancellor, declaring that Europeans were “united in our luck” thanks to Kohl’s efforts.Kohl, who served as chancellor for 16 years, considered Konrad Adenauer-West Germany’s visionary first chancellor, who allowed the nation to make a fresh start after World War II-as an ideological forefather.Mentor to Merkel, Kohl was later ousted by his protege, who urged their party to drop the self-declared “old warhorse” when he became embroiled in a campaign finance scandal in 1999.After retiring from politics, he suffered from health problems, and following a serious fall in 2008, was rarely seen in public in recent years.last_img read more

Outlook and SkyDrive users will now be able to chat with their Gmail contacts without leaving Microsoft’s service.Tech giant Microsoft announced a new feature today that some business owners who rely on online chatting tools to communicate with colleagues and others might find useful.Since releasing the new version of its popular webmail service Outlook.com last fall, Microsoft has been busy rolling out new features and tools for it. The latest: Microsoft is making it possible for users to chat with their Gmail contacts on Outlook. The new chat feature will be made available to users over the next few days, Microsoft says.Once you link up your Google account with Outlook, your Gmail friends will appear in your contact list and you’ll be able to chat with them. Users will also be able to chat with their Google-bound friends through SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud data storage service. This can, for instance, provide a useful way to communicate with colleagues while working on documents together. While Google Talk — Gmail’s instant messaging service — has text, audio and video chat options, Microsoft’s new chat will be text-only, for the time being at least. But thanks to a recent integration with Skype, Outlook.com users have access to video web calling. The new Outlook.com replaces Microsoft’s Hotmail service. It also features SkyDrive integration, a sleek new calendar and two-step verification for email accounts. On location at GTM 2017 Canadian agents are bucking the online trend

first_img Posted by Michael Smith Monday, May 8, 2017 On location at GTM 2017: Canadian agents are bucking the online trend Tags: Germanycenter_img NUREMBERG — Over 500 international travel industry representatives from 50 countries attended the opening reception of the 43rd GTM Germany Travel Mart in Nuremberg over the weekend. Taking place from May 7-9, GTM is an annual event organized by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) in partnership with a different region or city each year. This year’s event is hosted by Bavaria Tourism (by.TM) and Nuremberg Convention and Tourist Office. The event kicked off in grand style night with a special performance at the Nuremberg Opera House followed by a reception at the Germanisches National Museum. In her opening remarks, Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the GNTB, said: “Germany is very well positioned in the international tourism market. In 2016 we were once again able to build on our status as the second most popular destination for European travellers. The GTM is an ideal platform for satisfying the existing high demand for travel to Germany and for harnessing untapped potential. For us, this means intensive communication with the traditional travel trade as well as with online tour operators.”On the appeal of this year’s host city, Jen Huwald, CEO of by.TM said: “Tradition, innovation and hospitality – three words that sum up Bavaria and that are reflected in the 2017 GTM. It is these attributes that make the Free State so special and that make it Germany’s number one region for tourists.”“At the GTM here in Nuremberg our guests will experience at first hand what makes Bavaria so traditionally different,” he promised.More news:  Air Canada’s global sales update includes Managing Director, Canada & USA SalesFollowing the welcome reception, GTM held a press conference during which it released the latest tourism statistics for the country. According to Hedorfer, only 12% of international holidaymakers booked travel offline, a decrease of 6%.“They don’t use travel agencies anymore, they are going online,” she said, which is hard to argue with considering that 79% of travellers opt to book online. The good news is this trend doesn’t appear to have taken hold in Canada, said Antje Splettstoesser, Director for the GNTO in Canada. “We don’t see that in Canada – 32% of people who are booking directly to Germany are booking through a travel agency,” she assured. The number has gone down from previous years, she added, but comparing it to the worldwide average shows that Canadian agents are a much stronger presence than their international contemporaries.Other statistics revealed that Canada has seen a drop in overnight stays in Germany, a decrease of 4.3%. Again, this proved not to be the whole picture as statistics didn’t take into account shared accommodation, river cruising and small boutique hotels.Statistics Canada revealed in 2015 that Canadian visits was actually up by 20%, with expectations that numbers in 2016 would follow the trend of the last five years. “Overnights from 2010-2015 have increased by 12.5% from Canada, while visits have grown in the same timeframe by 76%,” said Splettstoesser.More news:  Onex paying big to get WestJet and that will send airfares soaring, says CWTSo why the discrepancy? Canadians have fallen in love with river cruising, which isn’t counted as overnights. Early numbers for 2017 are showing double-digit growth for overnight stays, which the GNTO would like to see more of. The organization is encouraging agents to promote booking pre- and post-cruise stays in one of Germany’s many attractive cities.“The GNTO has a long-term strategy for Canada,” added Splettstoesser. “The goal for 2030 is to get one million overnight stays,” which the GNTO said is attainable considering Canada’s growth as a source market.Established in 1972, the GTM is the most important B2B platform for Germany’s inbound tourism industry. The focal point of the event is the two-day B2B workshop at the NürnbergMesse trade fair centre. Around 330 exhibitors from the hotel industry and transport industries – together with inbound tourist agencies and local and regional tourism organizations – will be showcasing the latest trends, developments and tourism-related products in Germany to an international audience of trade professionals. Guests include more than 500 key account managers from the international travel industry and media representatives from key source markets for inbound tourism to Germany. The delegates are able to hold meetings and do business with German service providers, as well as make new contacts and strengthen existing ones. << Previous PostNext Post >> Sharelast_img read more
