Alberta and Nova Scotia have signed an agreement in principle to ensure apprenticeship training is transferable between both provinces. This agreement will improve the recognition of in-province training, allow for the recognition of apprenticeship work experience hours, and enhance labour mobility for apprentices in both provinces. Marc MacNeil, a third-year pipefitter apprentice from Nova Scotia said the new agreement will help to eliminate barriers and make it easier for apprentices to achieve certification. “This is great news. I know a lot of people apprenticing who aren’t being recognized for their qualifications even though they’ve completed their program,” said Mr. MacNeil. “It’s been tough for them to find an employer to take them on, and some have had to retake courses or work additional hours to get their journeyman status.” Premier Stephen McNeil said meeting face-to-face with Alberta Premier Dave Hancock during the premiers’ meetings in Charlottetown gave them the chance to discuss the real issues facing workers in the two provinces. “This is a win-win for our two provinces – and more importantly, it’s a win for our apprentices,” said Premier McNeil. “Today’s reality is workers are moving all over the country. Our job is to make sure they have clear pathways to obtaining their certification so they can take full advantage of the good jobs in our region.” Premier Hancock, also responsible for the Department of Innovation and Advanced Education, said they want to make it easier for apprentices and skilled workers in Canada to go where the work is. “The goal of this agreement with Nova Scotia is to streamline labour mobility, increase access to apprenticeship training and ideally, help Alberta attract more workers to meet the demands of our growing economy,” said Premier Hancock. “Under the Building Alberta Plan, we are investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta’s resources to ensure we’re able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. “We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.” Under this arrangement, if an apprentice takes pre-apprenticeship training at the Nova Scotia Community College and then moves to Alberta, their training would be recognized. This will save apprentices from writing additional exams or repeating courses. The two provinces are also working on an agreement that would make the process of moving between Nova Scotia and Alberta easier and less expensive for apprentices to continue their education. This co-operation between the two provinces will further support Nova Scotia’s efforts to modernize its apprenticeship system. On July 1, government transferred the apprenticeship training division of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education to a separate agency focused on getting more employers involved, improving the number of apprenticeship opportunities in the province, and helping more apprentices complete their training. The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency will work with industry to identify further opportunities for harmonization of apprenticeship training in the country.
Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger did not hold back on Twitter Sunday, slamming Metrolinx’s plan for increased train service beyond the typical weekday rush hours.Ontario’s Minister of Transportation told CHCH News he supports Metrolinx’s efforts to speed-up service expansions.There is an all-day direct train service from Burlington to Toronto, something Hamilton has been promised for years. Eisenberger tweeted Sunday the city would not get all day go service until 2031. He called on Metrolinx, the agency in charge of the project, to do better. In a written statement, the Mayor said, “That is unacceptable! Metrolinx themselves indicate that time line would hurt the economies of both Hamilton and Niagara.”Metrolinx CEP Phil Verster says services have been expanding. “In 2018, we increased and grew services across our lines by 22.6 per cent. Lakeshore East and West customers, as well as Niagara and Kitchener customers, enjoyed additional services and my plan for the next two years is to continue to increase services even more, every few months, as we improve the rail network,” said Verster in a statement. “Customers will have more travel options and will see service increase across the region by as much 20 per cent in 2019 alone. Transportation Minister Yurek’s and my commitment as Metrolinx CEO is to bring incremental increases in service every single year, making it easier than ever to travel across the Greater Golden Horseshoe on GO Transit.
