Jan 06, 1:05 pmCDC estimates life-threatening allergic reactions could occur in 11 out of 1 million vaccine shotsThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it estimates that life-threatening allergic reactions could occur in about 11 out of every 1 million COVID-19 vaccine shots given. That number is about 10 times higher than anaphylactic reactions to flu shots. However, officials are cautioning that the chances of any kind of adverse reaction are still incredibly rare as well as easy to manage so long as the person has access to treatment such as epinephrine. “Our vaccine safety systems haven’t picked up any worrisome signal. This means that right now, the known and potential benefits of the current COVID-19 vaccine outweigh the known and potential risks, getting COVID-19,” Dr. Nancy Messonier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Wednesday. With both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines available in the U.S., Messonier said one isn’t thought to be more prone to trigger allergies. The CDC’s estimate is based on 21 cases of anaphylaxis following a 10-day period after the administration of 1.9 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The vast majority of these reactions — 71%– occurred within 15 minutes of the vaccination. Follow-up information was provided on 20 of the 21 cases, and all of them recovered. The CDC recommends that anyone experiencing a life-threatening reaction to the vaccine not receive the second dose. They also recommend that people with a history of allergies be observed for 30 minutes after receiving the shot.Jan 06, 12:35 pm12 states in South, West report record-high hospitalizationsApproximately 1 in every 15 Americans has contracted the coronavirus, according to ABC News’ analysis of data compiled by the COVID Tracking Project.Since the beginning of the pandemic, over 700,000 Americans have been hospitalized with the virus. On Tuesday, 12 states — mostly in the South — reported a record number of patients hospitalized: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Some data may be skewed due to incomplete reporting over the holidays. And more vaccines will come. Europe has secured up to two billion doses of potential COVID-19 vaccines. We’ll have more than enough safe and effective vaccines for protecting all Europeans.”Jan 06, 8:33 amSurgeon general promises vaccine rollout is ‘ramping up’ In the wake of the slower-than-expected vaccine distribution, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams told ABC News’ Good Morning America Wednesday, “we are quickly ramping up.” Operation Warp Speed promised 20 million vaccines by the end of 2020. As of Tuesday morning, 4.8 million had been vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We’re now approaching 500,000 vaccinations per day,” Adams said, highlighting the increase in priority groups and locations where the vaccine is offered. “We’re going to make sure we’re putting vaccines and supplies where the demand actually is. And you’re going to continue to see these rates ramp up,” Adams said. “It is by no means as good as we would want it to be, but I want the American people to keep this in perspective: most difficult vaccine rollout in history. It’s ramping up and you’ll see things rapidly increase over the next couple of weeks.”Jan 06, 7:44 amEU medical agency recommends emergency use authorization for Moderna vaccine The European Medicines Agency has recommended granting a conditional marketing authorization for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for people who are at least 18 years old. This is the second vaccine the EMA has recommended for authorization. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was approved by the EU in December. The EMA cited a large clinical trial, involving around 30,000 people, that showed a 94.1% efficacy rate. “This vaccine provides us with another tool to overcome the current emergency,” said Emer Cooke, executive director of EMA. “It is a testament to the efforts and commitment of all involved that we have this second positive vaccine recommendation just short of a year since the pandemic was declared by WHO.”The European Commission must give final approval of the conditional marketing authorization in order for the vaccine to be distributed, but that appears to be a formality.Jan 06, 7:24 amUS sees record death total TuesdayThe U.S. recorded it’s deadliest day since the start of the pandemic on Tuesday, according to the latest data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. There were 3,775 deaths reported — the previous record was on Dec. 30 when 3,744 deaths were reported. It should be noted that the holidays have impacted data being reported and are expected to continue to be skewed over the coming days. The U.S. now has 375,385 deaths related to COVID-19. Olus “Tex” Justus entertained Tri-Staters for more than three decades as host of “T. J. Time,” a morning program featuring “old time” country music on Boonville’s WBNL radio station. A native of Texas, Justus made his singing debut in 1936 in Louisville. A few years later, he organized a dance band named the Texas Cowboys and settled in Owensboro. Justus joined the WGBF radio staff in Evansville in the late 1940s before he started broadcasting in Boonville four years later. Market analyst Nielsen, which studies consumers in more than 100 countries globally, has released its first esports report. The Esports Playbook is available here, at no cost, and it offers insights into the company’s findings across the UK, France, Germany and the US. Nielsen looked into behaviours of fans of various esports in these countries. More specifically it investigated how people become esports fans, how often fans engage with esports, what media esports fans consume, how they view traditional sports and what their attitudes toward sponsorship and brand involvement in esports are. It also looked at the involvement of types of brands in the space, and calculated that 600 sponsorship agreements have been made since the start of 2016. Of these it was found that there were 360+ ‘IT and Computer’ brands, 100+ retail brands, 60+ from online services, 50+ non-alcoholic drinks and 40+ online media. Furthermore, the report found that the attitude towards brand involvement in esports was the most positive in the US (58%) whilst it was lowest in the UK (51%). Perhaps more notably, across each region analysed, the negative attitude to brands’ involvement to date in esports was recorded as less than 10%. Esports 24 is Nielsen’s syndicated sponsorship tracking service for esports tournaments, and it established the top types of brands in esports in the second quarter of 2017. Unsurprisingly, the top ten was dominated by tech companies, but also included fast food and energy drinks. In the more recent past we’ve seen some other brands make an emergence, with Astralis, as part of RFRSH, amongst the leaders in bringing some different, major companies into the space. Astralis alone have established partnerships with Audi, JACK&JONES, and Coco Fuzion in the past year. Audi is’t the only car company to move in either; we’ve seen Mercedes-Benz partner with ESL and BMW announced as the Official Partner of the EULCS Finals in August. For these type of non-endemic firms, some of Nielsen’s Esports Playbook 2017 findings should prove relevant. In France, it was found that 31% of esports fans believe non-endemic brand activity is not at all appropriate. This is considerably higher than in the UK (22%), Germany (24%) and the United States (15%). There were of course variances within this dependent on the type of non-endemic business, as can be seen below. Moreover, there is hope for wholly non-endemic brands, and those deemed ‘least appropriate’. The report states: “The onus is ultimately on the individual brand to make a connection with the esports fan. It is this, more than category favorability alone, that will drive the success of an esports sponsorship activation.” In short if a brand comes in, spends money and does something interesting, fun and engaging, it is, of course, far likelier to be better received than a lazy or poorly delivered attempt. As for an audience snapshot the Playbook puts the proportion of male fans in esports at 71%, which it compares with a 61% male fanbase of sports generally and 59% in football. More specifically on this point, the report found that CS:GO was the title with the highest disparity between male and female fans at 90:10. Dota was at 84:16 whilst League, of the three major esports titles, had the largest female fanbase at 24%.Below are some further findings as to the views of fans of esports who apparently take a dim view, or perhaps a disinterested view is more accurate, of esports in the Olympics. Only 28% of respondents think it should be an Olympic sport, whilst just over half (53%) consider it an actual sport. A total of 71% think it’ll become a mainstream activity ‘in the near future’. Nielsen also makes clear at the end of the playbook that this report is just ‘a small sub-set of the full data set available’. There were a total of 4,000 surveyed for this report, broken down into 1,000 per country surveyed of esports fans aged 13-40.Check out the full Playbook for yourself here. Esports Insider says: There’ll be plenty more to come from Nielsen and the initial report states it’ll be releasing an analysis of China, Japan and South Korea in Q4 of this year. Brands are likely to find some of this insight useful, especially with the detailed comparisons of fans across these four markets but there’s little doubt that the more interesting comparisons will be drawn once there are data sets from the US, Europe and Asia.
By Samuel SukhnandanAmid concerns that the Alliance For Change (AFC) has still not managed to get a fair share of governance in the coalition Administration, there is now new worry over the fact that AFC Ministers have been given lucrative Ministries to handle, something that is not sitting too well with members of the People’s National Congress (PNC), the largest party within the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo drew this conclusion while addressing a media conference at his Church Street, Georgetown office on Thursday, when he highlighted that the move taken by President David Granger to strip Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman of responsibility for the oil and gas sector was not the first decision that proved that the AFC Ministers’ responsibilities were slowly being taken away from them. But more so, Jagdeo hinted that this could undermine the Cummingsburg Accord,Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeothe sweetheart deal that was signed between the AFC and APNU when they agreed to form a coalition to contest the 2015 General Election in Guyana. However, as of recent, the issue regarding this Accord has been discussed more widely and there have been calls within the AFC’s executive and central committee to have the agreement revised as soon as possible.Speaking about Trotman’s announcement that in a few months’ time, he would no longer have responsibility for the oil and gas sector, one of the largest natural resources sector Guyana is about to have, Jagdeo said, “I say he was stripped of his responsibility, because no matter how many press releases they issue, can they deny the fact that he was stripped? … How stupid do they think we are? TheyMinister Cathy Hughestook it away from him.”The Opposition Leader said he did not believe the “silly excuse” given by Trotman, whereby he has claimed that he recommended to President Granger that the Department of Energy be established without having it placed under his watch. “He was recommending the Department of Energy to be created within his Ministry and with him being the Minister. That is what he was recommending. Not that the Department be created in the Office of the President and him being stripped of theMinister Raphael Trotmanministerial responsibility,” Jagdeo posited.Warning signsResponsibility for the environment was first taken away from Trotman when a decision was made to establish the Department of Environment that is now housed in the Ministry of the Presidency.According to the Opposition Leader, this came as no surprise to him, because he saw that moves were being made to implement certain major changes, but not just specific to Trotman’s perceived demotion. The first sign, he said, was when President Granger did not show up to deliver the feature address at the inaugural Oil and Gas Summit (GIPEX 2018). Instead, Trotman delivered the address and Minister Carl Greenidge also delivered remarks.“That was a precursor. But before that, I had spoken to the media about an investigation and the conflict within APNU … that tensions would rise within their structure because I pointed out that a lot of people had taken information to Granger about Trotman, particularly AFC members,” he alleged.Given the fact that the Government has said little about this issue, Jagdeo believesMinister Khemraj Ramjattanthat the Administration would “keep circling the wagons”. He said, “Trust me in circling the wagons, you would see for the next few days, they will talk up Trotman, they will say he is the greatest thing since ice-cream. They may give him a few more useless designations… something of that nature will manifest itself.”A persistent Jagdeo told the press, however, “we need to know why he was removed. Is it because they found something or a lot of things that are adverse? My information is that they found quite a bit. They know quite a bit. And my information also is that the PNC people are saying that the AFC people making all the money, because they have lucrative Ministries. So it’s their turn now.”Now that plans are being made for the Department of Energy to be placed under the Ministry of the Presidency that responsibility will now fall directly under Minister of State, Joseph Harmon. But this is not the first move made by President Granger to lessen the responsibility of AFC Ministers.Undermining AFC MinistersIn fact, the first move he made was directed at the Working People’s AllianceMinister Noel Holder(WPA), whereby its leader, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine was removed as Education Minister and appointed Minister responsible for Public Service. That Ministry again falls under the direct responsibility of the Ministry of the Presidency, with Harmon as the head.Another AFC executive, Minister Cathy Hughes was first appointed as Minister of Tourism in 2015 when the coalition Government first took office. Her stint as Tourism Minister was short-lived, and she was reassigned a relatively unknown ministry which has fewer responsibilities, the Public Telecommunications Ministry. The Tourism Ministry now falls under another AFC executive and son-in-law of the President, Dominic Gaskin, who also is in charge of the Business Ministry, a lesser known ministry.Only recently, a decision was taken by Government to also transfer the responsibility of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the sugar industry to the Special Purpose Unit (SPU) that has been set up under the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL). NICIL falls under the Finance Ministry, which is headed by Winston Jordan. One can only conclude that another AFC Minister, Noel Holder has also been stripped of his responsibility of the sugar sector.Although AFC’s Khemraj Ramjattan has responsibility for national security, the Department of Citizenship was created for PNC member Winston Felix who heads that department. At present, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, also an AFC member, performs a ceremonial role as a senior Government functionary. His major responsibility is for the public information sector. Entities such as the State-owned Guyana Chronicle newspaper, the National Communications Network, and the Department of Public Information, formerly the Government Information Agency, fall under his charge.

Once both Sachin and Dhoni are free from their cricketing engagements, I will ensure that they get to fly Su-30MKI.They have done our country proud and it will be an honour for us,” Naik said.ACM Naik informed that as of now there are no plans of awarding any honorary post to the Indian captain like Tendulkar. Dhoni who was accompanied by his wife Sakshi was there at the Air Force chief’s residence for over an hour as he interacted with senior officers. The meeting with ACM Naik was organised by former Indian team manager Wing Commander M Baladitya. India’s new senior men’s basketball coach, American Kenny Natt, will get a chance to see his wards in competitive action for the first time when a five-nation Middle Asia qualifying tournament takes place in the Capital from Wednesday to Friday. India play Sri Lanka in the lone Pool, A game on Wednesday.Indian Coach Kenny NattThe winner of this tournament -in which the other participants are Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal -will qualify for the FIBA Asia Basketball Championship that will be played in China in the middle of September.Understandably, Natt is eager to see whether his new methods have made a difference or not. “I am as interested as everyone else in seeing them play, because I haven’t seen them compete since I joined. Guys perform differently in games and I will only get information about that over the course of this competition.I hope we take care of business and go up to the next level,”Natt said on the sidelines of the Junior National Championship on Tuesday. “I have pushed them harder in the last four weeks than they have ever been pushed in their lives, with regards to their discipline and concentration in particular.”Natt has a disadvantage of not knowing anything about the opposition, but downplayed the matter. “I don’t know the teams so I’m going to have a look for the first time to see what the competition is like here. I think it’s a great thing because we finally get a chance to play against someone other than ourselves, against new coaching philosophies, and that’s how you get better as a team. But I am not so concerned about the other teams as I am about my own,” Natt said.advertisementAsked to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian side, Natt said: “The biggest strength of the team is they are very hard workers. Everything I’ve put in is exactly what we use in the NBA -the offensive and defensive sets -and that’s all new to them. I’ve challenged them to remember plays and they are now running them, so that tells me they are very good cerebral players. On the weaknesses side, we need to get better on defence -that’s something every team needs to be better at.”Indian Team: Sambhaji Kadam, Amjyot Singh, Hareesh Koroth, Prakash Mishra, Satnam Singh Bhamara, Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Amrit Pal Singh, Eudrick Pereira, Trideep Rai, Riyazuddin, Yadwinder Singh, Jagdeep Singh Bains.
