Analysts expected a much lower profit of roughly 84 cents per share.Still, SunTrust reported an 8 percent drop in earnings from the third-quarter of 2014, when the bank reported a profit of $563 million, or $1.06 per share.“Our fundamentals are strong and, despite the challenging operating environment, I am confident in our ability to deliver further value to our clients and shareholders as we continue to execute against our key strategies.”“SunTrust delivered solid earnings performance in the third quarter, driven by continued loan and deposit growth, improved efficiency, and strong asset quality trends,” said William H. Rogers, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of SunTrust Banks, Inc. “Our fundamentals are strong and, despite the challenging operating environment, I am confident in our ability to deliver further value to our clients and shareholders as we continue to execute against our key strategies.”SunTrust noted that average loan balances remain stable, and the firm reported growth in both the mortgage and consumer direct loan product lines. Those areas of growth were offset by pay downs in commercial loans and lower consumer indirect loans.Overall loan quality also improved with nonperforming SunTrust loans declining 4% from the previous quarter and net charge-offs in the third-quarter declining to $71 million in the third quarter, down from $128 million a year earlier. Half-time: West Ham 3 Fulham 0

first_imgAndy Carroll made an immediate impact for West Ham, who are in complete control at Upton Park.Carroll, signed on loan from Liverpool, played a pivotal role in his new team going ahead after only 54 seconds.Ricardo Vaz Te collected the England striker’s flick and laid the ball across to an unmarked Kevin Nolan, who fired into the corner of the net.Kieran Richardson, making his Fulham debut following a move from Sunderland, brought a save from keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with a long-range effort, before West Ham almost doubled their lead.Again Carroll was in the thick of the action, this time nodding down to Mohamed Diame, who smashed a shot against the bar.Keeper Mark Schwarzer produced a near-post save to deny Vaz Te, but was unable to rescue Fulham when Mahamadou Diarra allowed Winston Reid to get in front of him and head home Matt Taylor’s 29th-minute corner.Taylor then added the third, rifling in the loose ball after Brede Hangeland had partially cleared another high ball towards Carroll.New signing Dimitar Berbatov is among Fulham’s substitutes.Click here for the Fulham v West Ham quizFollow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

These are the best sports video games of all time

first_imgAs the video game industry continues to propel itself into unprecedented levels of popularity, more and more genres are being released to suit the tastes of video game fans across the globe. From niche genres like survival horror to incredibly popular first person shooters and casino style games like those at House of Fun, the industry is constantly innovating to create novel experiences while bringing new dimensions to existing fan favorites. That said, of all the video game genres out there, sports is one that has amassed an incredible number of loyal fans that don’t appear to have been tempted to switch. Thanks to the enormous variety in titles on offer, which can provide hours of enjoyment for followers of almost every sport, these games have become some of the most well renowned in the industry’s history. Here are 3 of the most impressive sports titles to have ever been released.PongAs not only one of the first sports titles but in fact, one of the first video games ever to be released, Pong is definitely worthy of a place on this list. The virtual table tennis game rocketed to success in 1972. After being released in arcades, a home edition was created which saw it shoot to even greater levels of stardom. It’s creation had a profound effect on sports-based gameplay inspiring countless titles we still enjoy today. What’s more, the in-house edition of the game paved the way for developers to create more games playable from the comfort of your home.Wii SportsThe Nintendo Wii marks a pivotal point in the timeline of at home virtual reality gaming thanks to the revolutionary controller which saw players incorporate more dynamic movements into gameplay for the first time. Wii Sports allowed players to hold more control over the movement of their avatars and propelled gaming to an entirely new physical level. What’s more, as the game offered five different sports, boxing, bowling, golf, tennis and baseball, it appealed to players with a variety of sporting interests. As well as allowing gamers to compete against each other, making the Wii a more sociable gaming experience, it also banished the notion that gaming is primarily for younger players and appealed to every generation. The FIFA franchise There are only a handful of video games which have become as popular as the FIFA franchise since it was first introduced back in 1993. It offers gamers the chance to play through their favorite teams and players, with millions of fans jumping at the chance to emulate their heroes. What’s more, Fifa provides gamers with an almost infinite number of playing options thanks to the sheer number of players, leagues and teams available to compete with and against. Finally, FIFA’s ability to adapt to wider technological advancements is another reason it’s managed to retain its popularity. Taking gameplay online meant football fans could log on and battle it out using their favorite teams against other players around the world. That’s all in addition to incredible graphics, modes of play and a killer soundtrack.  Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebookby Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksRecommended for youAspireAbove.comRemember Pauley Perrette? 5 Lessons From the Garage48 Helsinki Hackathon

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#start#startups Garage48 Helsinki, the largest hackathon in the Nordics, took place last week. It gathered 120 hackers from Finland, Estonia and Latvia under the same roof and challenged them to go from zero to demo in 48 hours. Sixteen startups were created during the weekend. Together with Osma Ahvelampi (CTO, Sulake) and Teemu Kurppa (co-founder, Jaiku), I was a mentor to those teams. At Garage48, the goal is to produce a small startup, rather than just a really nice hack like you would at a traditional hackathon. There is a requisite for each team to have at least one developer (frontend or backend), a designer and a marketing person. At the end of the event, we had a demo day where the teams showcased what they built. From what I saw, many teams ran into the same problems, which caused them to miss their objectives. Here are some tips to get around those blocks and shine during demo day.Aim LowStartups are all about delivering a simple product to a niche that needs it. Garage48 is nothing different, but there’s only so much you can do in 48 hours. Aim low. Focus on technology you know. Some teams have problems compiling the tools they needed, so don’t plan too many features. It’s OK if it’s unfinished, as long as you can communicate its concept. This doesn’t mean you should take the easy route and make a me-too idea. Build what’s needed for a good demo. Nobody cares if your payment processing really works, you just need to show that you’ve built something meaningful. One example was Montroller. The concept was simple: motion based remote control of a robot using your mobile. They built their prototype on the first night, so they had enough time to port to more mobile platforms, prepare a nice video and make their Lego robot look better.Don’t Ignore Project ManagementMost teams seem to ignore basic project management, apparently because they feel it is overkill. Instead, they prefer jumping into code and iterating. But without a list of deliverables, it is difficult to plan what will be built in 48 hours. You won’t have any time to pivot, so you need to make sure that your whole team understands and agrees on what needs to be built. Set a clear, detailed objective. People often forget the need to sleep (at least eight hours in two days), eat and prepare for the demo. Another problem is that without planning, designers or marketers won’t have anything to do in the beginning. Also, make sure your team is a balanced team. Somebody needs to make a pretty website, GUI and write a blurb about your project. If you spend one hour planning ahead, your entire team can start working. Even then, you’ll probably end up with some team members having more free time than the others, so why not put them into action? For example, Blow’Em was on its way to have a working game demo, but it was going to be a simple proof of concept. The designers and marketers had nothing to do, so they started working on a promo video, more characters and funny names, which made their whole demo more catchy.Everyone in the Same RoomMost of the problems that teams run into seem to be related to bad communication. In some cases, coders will go into another room than the designers and the team leader. In practice, this means that whenever you run into a wall, no one can help you. It can be frustrating to explain to an art student why you can’t do 3D previews easily, but it’s better than producing all the assets in an unusable format. Make sure everyone knows what is being worked on, and why. One problem with piecing a team of random people together is that you’re bound to have bad people in there. It’s important to identify them. Some people make snarky comments, shoot down ideas, or don’t listen; many teams waste time because of this. After all, you’re there to have fun, so it’s important you don’t offend one member of your team. While you can’t fire these people, you need somebody who can make the decisions and deliver results rather than to debate.Go With “Good Enough”A lot of people found it difficult to produce something just “good enough.” It’s difficult to pull the plug on a design or code instead of continuing to polishing it because you know it’s not as good as it could be. Doing this can slow down the progress of the entire team. This can be especially problematic in group decisions. Many teams did not know where and how to look for domain names efficiently and thus spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a good name for their site. Focus on getting things done. If something unexpected happens, don’t just try to fix it for hours, talk to your team or the other teams. Maybe someone else solved it before. Drop extra features if you get stuck. It’s All About the DemoLast but not least, make a good demo. After all, it’s the only thing that others will see of your project. Make sure you test it before you ship. Videos are always difficult, because you need to make sure they will load, the sound will be on and the video can be shown in full screen on demo area’s second screen. Mobile demos are tricky, because cameras can’t easily capture what’s on a small screen from far, so you may want to consider using a web version, an iPad or slides.Lead photo (members of LapLab, the winning team) by Ragnar Sass; bottom two photos by gunarsgcenter_img ramine darabiha Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

How to Choose the Right Epic Music for Your Film

first_imgQuestions to Ask When Looking for Epic MusicWhat is my story? What is the story you’re trying to tell? Not the big story, the micro story in the scene. How is this scene working towards your narrative goal and what are the music requirements to get you there? For example, if you’re main character is going through battle in which he is going to lose, it doesn’t make sense to have music that is happy victorious orchestral music. Maybe it makes more sense to have music that is dissonant? In some circumstances you may want to use music that is the complete opposite of the feelings in the scene. The best example is a child singing during a horror film. In most circumstances a child singing isn’t scary, but in the context of a suspenseful scene it is extremely uncanny, thus progressing the narrative story. The same could be said about an epic movie. For increased effect it might be helpful to have a soft piano instead of a full epic orchestra. What do I want my audience to feel?Do you want your audience to feel empowered or defeated? Joyful or somber? It’s actually really easy to find music related to your specific feeling online. Feeling, like story, should follow a pre-defined structure laid out by the editor. When music the music complements the feelings conveyed in the footage it is easy to make your audience feel happy, sad, and every emotion in between. Will music drive the scene?Music can sometimes be in the driver’s seat and sometimes it can simply emphasize all of the other on-screen elements. If music is going to be front and center then you probably want to find a good track before you begin refining your edit. If it’s in the background you can simply incorporate it later in the editing process. Will this music work with my other audio? Not every song will work well when you incorporate sound effects and dialogue. Songs with horns and high pitch instruments tend to compete with other audio elements. My personal recommendation is to download a free audio preview before you actually commit to purchase your music. Once you’re ready to finalize you’re edit you can simply purchase the unwatermarked track and replace it in your timeline.Do I have the rights to this music? You can’t simply put any music into your film project (that’s a quick way to get sued). You must have the rights to use the music in your scene. So really you have two options: hire a musician to create the music or license it. Hiring a musician can be a great option (Gasp!), but it can be a huge pain to not only find the right musician, but also convey your creative vision to said artist. The best option is to license music that you find. Unfortunately, licensing Hanz Zimmer is extremely expensive so you might need something a little more reasonable like say…PremiumBeat. Here on PremiumBeat we have thousands of tracks specifically designed to work perfectly in video or film productions. And when it comes to epic music there’s no shortage of grandiose tracks.ConclusionAt the end of the day picking epic music is all about motivation. Each element from cinematography to music should all progress the story and add interest to your film.Want to learn more about incorporating epic music into your projects? Share in the comments below. What Epic Music Can Do for a Film?Epic music is epic because of the emotions it generates inside the minds of your audience. While the epic category has traditionally been categorized as massive classical compositions it’s not uncommon to see more non-traditional music works in modern cinema. So what can (the right) epic music do for your film? Well…1. Epic Music Raises the Narrative StakesA good story is all about contrast:Good vs. EvilInternal vs. ExternalLove vs. LogicYou get the idea. The greater the contrast, the greater the stakes. When there’s more to lose there’s more for the audience to worry about and your music is a great opportunity to enhance these feelings. Epic music makes the illusion of grandeur even greater. It makes your audience care about the person falling off the cliff. More practically, it makes the audience worried about characters even if they already know their fate.At the end of the day your audience isn’t in any real danger if your hero is killed. Sure it’ll make them sad, but the stakes aren’t real. However, epic music can materialize your audience feelings despite their apathy or intrigue towards your story.2. Epic Music Guides Your AudienceA film can be confusing, especially considering the fact that most film audiences don’t watch movies in the same way you do. As storytellers we’re often keen into the narrative structures that filmmakers use to progress the story. Things like editing, lighting, and shot choice are easily recognized by filmmakers, not so much by the average audience.Epic music tells your audience what to feel. It may seem simple, but without music an audience isn’t always keen to what’s important and what’s less important. Music will tell your audience when get on the edge of their seat and when to lean back.3. Epic Music Makes Everything Else More EpicIt’s a scientific fact that music can change the way an audience perceives your film. In a way, music is the metaphorical lens through which they will watch your movie. When you include epic music in your film it has the power to make everything else more epic. From acting to editing, epic music can make your film seem bigger and more dramatic to your audience. Here’s a few things to consider when looking for that perfect epic track. The filmmaking world is massive in every sense of the word. From the sheer number of those working in the industry to the size and scope of the films being produced, the love for both filmmaking and cinema has never been bigger. And if you have a big film coming up you will need an epic song. Here’s a few tips for picking the perfect epic track. How Does Epic Music Change a Film?Music has the ability to radically change your audiences perceptions and emotions towards your film. While it would be certainly overstepping to say that music has the power to make a bad film good, it can certainly make a good film great. Don’t believe me? Check out this example of what the Star Wars Throne Room scene would look like with no music. Here’s the same scene with music. Notice how the overall tone of the entire scene is different. While these above example was a bit extreme, on a practical level choosing the right music is a task worthy of your time and efforts.last_img read more

Jordan says NBA superteams will create 28 ‘garbage’ teams—report

first_imgMOST READ Michael Jordan. AFP/GETTY IMAGES FILE PHOTONEW YORK—Retired NBA legend Michael Jordan has warned that the “superteam” era will create a league with 28 “garbage” clubs that will struggle.Jordan, who sparked the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles in the 1990s, addressed the topic in an interview with Cigar Aficionado magazine unveiled Thursday on its website.ADVERTISEMENT Jordan, 54, also said he lacks the patience to be a coach, saying his biggest problem is the focus level of today’s players.“For me to ask an individual to focus on the game the way I played would, in some ways, be unfair and if he didn’t do it, there’s no telling where my emotions would be,” Jordan told the magazine.Regarding Woods, whose major total ranks second to the 18 won by Jack Nicklaus, Jordan said the injured star is in a transitional phase perhaps made more difficult by today’s social media.“I don’t know if I could have survived in this Twitter time where you don’t have the privacy that you would want.”Tiger, Jack both great ADVERTISEMENT Read Next LATEST STORIES LOOK: Loisa Andalio, Ronnie Alonte unwind in Amanpulo for 3rd anniversary Trending Articles PLAY LIST 00:50Trending Articles01:48NBA: Kawhi, George seek more for Clippers than beating Lakers00:50Trending Articles01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games Nonong Araneta re-elected as PFF president Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH BSP sees higher prices in November, but expects stronger peso, low rice costs to put up fight Jordan would not be drawn into a comparison of Woods and Nicklaus in the Greatest of All Time debate.“That’s more for stories and hype,” Jordan told the magazine. “Jack and Tiger never played against each other. They never played with the same equipment.“I never played against Wilt Chamberlain. I never played against Jerry West. To now say that one is greater than the other is being a little bit unfair.“How much did each one impact, change or evolve the game? Obviously Jack won more during the time he played. Tiger evolved it to where it crossed a lot of different boundaries, where it’s not just a white guy’s sport — black guys, African-Americans, all minorities play the game.“He played it at a level to where it generated so much interest financially that it grew the game from a financial standpoint. Now does that constitute him being the greatest? To say he’s any less than Jack, I think, is unfair.”Jordan on Rory: ‘Truly amazing’ Jordan moved the Nicklaus-Woods win argument to the NBA level, comparing his title total to the record 11 won by former Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.“Yeah, Jack has got 18 majors and Tiger has got 14. And that’s how people are judging certain things,” Jordan said. “I won 6 championships. Bill Russell won 11. Does that make Bill Russell better than me? Make me better than him? No because when you try to compare different eras and equate who is better than the other, it’s an unfair parallel, an unfair choice.”Jordan also praised Northern Ireland star Rory McIlroy, saying he admires him but has yet to play a round with him.“Very talented. Never played golf with him yet,” Jordan said. “Seen him on the range. We’ve talked. I’m a big fan. For someone that small to generate that much power is truly amazing.” Frontrow holds fun run to raise funds for young cancer patients  Kammuri turning to super typhoon less likely but possible — Pagasa Pacquiao conqueror Horn wins top Aussie award Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC Fire hits houses in Mandaluyong City He also talked about his pal Tiger Woods, a 14-time major champion golfer struggling to return after multiple back operations, and said he himself might not have “survived in this Twitter time.”Jordan’s toughest talk was on the state of the NBA, where several teams have stockpiled talent to try and dethrone the reigning champion Golden State Warriors, who last season united stars Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry to form a dominant squad that claimed a second title in three seasons.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutIn the past few months, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder have added star talent to their rosters.“I think it’s going to hurt the overall aspect of the league from a competitive standpoint,” Jordan told the magazine. “You’re going to have one or two teams that are going to be great and another 28 teams that are going to be garbage, or they are going to have a tough time surviving in the business environment.” Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. He also got a standing ovation from the sellout crowd.“It was cool when they flashed to me,” Wade said. “They caught me smiling and reminiscing on highlights.”Unfortunately for the Heat, there was little else to celebrate.“Being on the floor with Giannis and his ability to drive and the shooters they put around him make them tough to guard,” Wade said. “We haven’t cracked the code yet.”On the other hand, the Bucks had an answer for whatever the Heat tried.“We’re an attack-the-paint team and they basically shut that off,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “It obviously required one of our better games and it was probably one of pour poorer games we’ve had in a while.”Middleton added 18 points and 10 assists for a career-best three consecutive games with a double-double for Milwaukee, which improved to (29-6) for the second-best home record in the NBA behind the Denver Nuggets (30-6) and secure their most home victories since 2000-01.The Bucks (54-19) clinched their first Central Division title since 2000-01 on Thursday night when the Golden State Warriors beat the Indiana Pacers. The win came with a brief scare for the Bucks: Antetokounmpo went down in a mix of players after stealing a pass from Goran Dragic early in the second quarter. Milwaukee immediately called a timeout and after a few moments, Antetokounmpo limped to the bench favoring his right leg. A short rest got him right back on the court.Hassan Whiteside came off the bench to score 14 points and grab 10 rebounds, Kelly Olynyk added 13 and Bam Adebayo and Wade each had 12, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Bucks took the season series 3-1 for their 16th series win of the season out of a possible 22, including its 11th straight against Eastern Conference opponents. Ordinance to amend Enemy Property Act to be re-promulgated

first_imgNew Delhi, May 25 (PTI) The government is learnt to have today recommended re-promulgating an ordinance to amend the Enemy Property Act to allow custodians to continue to hold sway over such properties.Sources said the ordinance was not on the regular agenda of the Union Cabinet which met this afternoon but was added at the last moment. “Yes, it has been cleared,” said a senior functionary.A bill to replace the ordinance is pending with the Rajya Sabha which had referred it to a Select Committee. The Committee had recently tabled its report in the House recommending a few changes. Following the end of the Budget session, the ordinance had lapsed. The first ordinance was issued on January 1, while the second one was issued on April 2.Once signed by the President — who is in China on a state visit — the ordinance will be issued for the third time before Rajya Sabha takes a call on it in the Monsoon Session which usually begins in the last week of July. The earlier ordinances amended the provisions of the Act declaring that all “enemy property” vested in the custodian would continue to vest in the custodian irrespective of the death or extinction of the enemy. The custodian of enemy property in the country is an Indian government department that is empowered to appropriate property in India owned by Pakistani nationals. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, the Enemy Property Act was enacted in 1968.The Narendra Modi government, following the footsteps of the previous UPA government, has been keen to amend the Enemy Property Act.advertisementA new section was inserted in the previous ordinance to say that “the Custodian, may, after making such inquiry as he deems necessary, by order, declare that the property of the enemy or the enemy subject or the enemy firm described in the order, vests in him under this Act and issue a certificate to this effect and such certificate shall be the evidence of the facts stated therein”.The President had yesterday signed an ordinance to keep state boards out of the ambit of uniform medical and dental college exams for one year.
